SPAR South Africa appoints Group CEO and COO

SPAR South Africa announced the appointment of Mr Angelo Swartz as the group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with effect from 1 October 2023 and of Ms Megan Pydigadu in a new position of group Chief Operating Officer (COO) with effect from 1 November 2023.

Chairman of the Guild

Mr Swartz is highly respected in SPAR South Africa, with a deep knowledge of the market, having been with the company for 16 years and at Woolworths before that. He is currently the Divisional Managing Director of the second largest SPAR division in South Africa, the SPAR KwaZulu-Natal division. In addition to his role as group CEO, Mr Swartz will also take up the role of Chairman of the SPAR Southern Africa Guild on 1 September 2023.

Chief Operating Officer

The appointment of Ms Megan Pydigadu to the new role of group Chief Operating Officer is with effect from 1 November 2023. This position will strengthen the company’s executive team and provide support to the CEO on the co-ordination and oversight of the operational and functional activities of the company as well as retailer profitability.

Chairman of the Board

Mr Mike Bosman will revert to being the independent non-executive Chairman of the Board, effective 1 October 2023. He will also continue to serve as independent non-executive Chairman on the company’s major foreign subsidiary boards. Mr Bosman will work closely alongside Mr Swartz to ensure a seamless transition for Mr Swartz in his new role as CEO.

Commenting on the changes to the Board, Mike Bosman, said, “I am delighted to be handing over the reins to Angelo, a proudly South African leader with deep experience in the local retail industry. Mr Swartz has demonstrated excellent strategic and operational leadership across all his roles at SPAR.”
