Our Focus on Health, Exercise & Nutrition

Promoting healthy lifestyles is a key pillar of SPAR’s responsible retailing agenda, whereby we actively look to endorse good nutrition and physical activity. We are strong believers in the essential role of good quality products and relevant nutritional information to ensure a balanced, healthy diet. This focus on nutrition further complements SPAR initiatives targeted at exercise, understanding the benefits this brings to both physical and mental well-being.

SPAR’s commitment to promoting healthy eating has seen improvements for consumers in fresh foods as well as dry goods. Around the globe, various SPAR initiatives have focused on working better with suppliers and diversifying the food portfolio. This way, SPAR can provide its customers access to fresher products and where possible, options to choose healthier alternatives. SPAR has set out a clear strategy for offering customers organic products, natural products as well as products that fit within specific dietary requirements.

In understanding our footprint stretches across markets where overweight or undernourishment are prevalent, we are motivated to engage in tailored projects to combat all forms of malnutrition. This has seen the launch of dedicated education campaigns instore and online as well as SPAR Partners engaging in multi-stakeholder development projects across the public and private sector. At SPAR, we are continuously looking to take part in innovative projects that allow us to contribute to improving the health of our customers.

In addition to our focus on healthy eating, SPAR recognises the benefits of exercise. As such, our engagement with sports initiatives is another key part of our business activities. Partnerships between SPAR retailers, local schools and sports clubs reflect the importance SPAR places on promoting exercise in local communities. Support from SPAR can come in many forms, including volunteering time, instore fundraising activities, the provision of sports equipment and financial assistance.

SPAR International is also the principal sponsor of European Athletics and has been since 1996. This long-term support of athletes across 50 athletics federations in Europe reflects the SPAR ethos of working together for mutual benefit. The passion that European Athletics and the athletes have for athletics shines through in everything they do; be it on the track or in the field. This kind of passion and belief in working together is also seen throughout the global SPAR family.

In 2019, SPAR International proudly committed to another four years as principal sponsor of the organisation.
