SPAR Gran Canaria marks a year of solidarity and giving

January 8, 2021 IN THE CATEGORY: Community, Responsible retailing

SPAR Gran Canaria showed its community commitment during 2020 with considerable charitable food donations, and support to local producers of the primary sector and social work campaigns.

Despite the decline of tourism on the island, SPAR Gran Canaria saw stable growth and a turnover of €347 million in 2020. The company has sought to support its communities by donating more than 200 tonnes of food to various local associations and NGOs.

Boosting community support

In the first half of 2020, the Spanish SPAR partner tripled the number of donations made in the same period the year before. It also increased the funds and donations allocated to social projects to counteract the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on family budgets.

During the pandemic, local producers have been unable to sell their products due to the closure of hotels and restaurants. SPAR reinforced its support of the primary sector by acquiring part of the surpluses.

SPAR has sold over 147 tonnes of locally grown fruit in recent months by actively promoting fresh produce. This approach has benefitted over 200 farmers and their families. To the same end, SPAR Gran Canaria has actively supported the sale of more than 45,000 litres of 100% Canarian UHT milk.

Social initiatives

The company also supported various social initiatives. It partnered with the Spanish Association Against Cancer to promote healthy lifestyles and cancer prevention measures. The solidarity initiative ‘ValesMucho’ (you are worth it) of OGADENIA Couture, also supported by SPAR, helps families of convalescent children fill their shopping carts.

These new collaborations add to initiatives such as Foresta Foundation’s reforestation days and Los Gofiones’ promotion of Canarian culture.

SPAR has also continued to support the Down Syndrome Association of Las Palmas. Other partnerships include Barrios Orquestados, Júnguel Sanjuán Satocan Foundation, Asociación Oportunidades de Vida, Fundación Mapfre Guanarteme, Sanolandia, and 5 al día (five a day).

Likewise, SPAR Gran Canaria has renewed its commitment to Canarian sports by sponsoring UD Las Palmas, UD Valsequillo, the CB SPAR Gran Canaria women’s basketball club, the women’s soccer team CF Femarguín SPAR Gran Canaria, the SPAR Guerra del Río Sailing Race, and the Canarian wrestling club, SPAR Unión Sardina.

Throughout 2020, SPAR Gran Canaria focused on supporting its communities and offering the best value products and services – a strategy that will continue in 2021.
