The company invested €426,000 in expanding the photovoltaic solar generation plant at its fruit and vegetable logistics centre in Mercalaspalmas that will generate an estimated 746MWh of energy annually. The resulting reduction of approximately 214 tonnes of CO2 emissions will help the company achieve its energy sustainability goals.
As part of their retail expansion strategy, SPAR Gran Canaria are opening new stores and modernising existing stores using environmentally friendly energy sources and materials. LED lighting and vertical refrigerators fitted with doors reduce energy consumption in the new 180m² SPAR Supermarket in Becerril and the 600m² SPAR Supermarket in San Mateo, Las Palmas.
SPAR Gran Canaria’s responsible retailing strategy includes extensive support to the primary sector. Over 200 farmers and small-scale producers supply local products to the company, providing employment and maintaining local specialities in the range. Through its local sourcing initiative, Me Gusta (I like it), customers access a great range of these products in SPAR stores across the island.
Being embedded in the communities they serve, SPAR Gran Canaria’s retailers support local food banks and a variety of local charitable projects throughout the year.

About SPAR Spain
SPAR Spain was founded in 1959 when a group of wholesalers who wished to join an international organisation came together. As a result, the brand became the first voluntary trading chain to be established in Spain.
The head office is in Barcelona. It provides buying, marketing, communications, and brand support to the 13 regional partners. Together, the SPAR operators actively continue the expansion of the brand across the country.
