SPAR Gran Canaria invests in solar generation plant expansion

June 14, 2021 IN THE CATEGORY: Climate, Responsible retailing

SPAR Gran Canaria has taken steps to reduce its environmental impact with a €426,000 investment into expanding the photovoltaic solar generation plant at its fruit and vegetable logistics centre in Mercalaspalmas. The SPAR operator installed an additional 1,125 new photovoltaic solar panels on the roof, bringing the total to 1,525 panels.

The solar plant in Mercalaspalmas will generate an estimated 746MWh of energy annually. The resulting reduction of approximately 214 tonnes of CO2 emissions will help the company achieve its energy sustainability goals.

The expansion is not the only solar plant investment being made this year. The SPAR operator also plans to expand the solar park at its logistics Distribution Centre in the El Goro Industrial Estate. These investments reflect how important 2021 is to SPAR Gran Canaria to achieve major energy efficiency goals.

SPAR Gran Canaria has identified a series of other initiatives in their responsible retailing strategy, including continued extensive support to the primary sector. Over 200 farmers and small-scale producers supply local products to the company, providing employment and maintaining local specialities in the range. Being embedded in the communities they serve, SPAR retailers in Gran Canaria also support food banks and those in need.

About SPAR Spain

SPAR Spain was founded in 1959 when a group of wholesalers who wished to join an international organisation came together. As a result, the brand became the first voluntary trading chain to be established in Spain.

The head office is in Barcelona. It provides buying, marketing, communications, and brand support to the 13 regional partners. Together, the SPAR operators actively continue the expansion of the brand across the country.
