SPAR Gran Canaria maintains growing sales trend and community solidarity during 2020

March 15, 2021 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

SPAR Gran Canaria closed 2020 with total sales figures of €346 million, maintaining the sales level it has achieved over the previous years. The global pandemic has severely impacted Gran Canaria’s tourism sector and during this difficult year, the Spanish SPAR Partner remained committed to supporting the island’s primary sector, local employment, and responsible retailing initiatives.

During the past year, SPAR Gran Canaria reached a total sales area of more than 65,000m2 by opening two new stores on the island, SPAR El Goro in Telde and SPAR Tenoya in Las Palmas. It also revamped six stores in Las Palmas, Telde, and Agüimes. SPAR Gran Canaria’s employment numbers reached 3,368 in 2020, while a total of 79 young people gained their first work experience by doing an internship at SPAR in 2020.

Sustainability work

In line with its commitment to sustainability, SPAR significantly stepped up its contribution to the Canary Islands’ primary sector in 2020, as well as the support it provides to local charities. Last year, the group delivered more than 200 tonnes of food to the Red Cross, the Las Palmas Food Bank, and Cáritas.

The company also donated goods to various other charity foundations, municipal social services, and NGOs that supply necessities to the most vulnerable population of Gran Canaria.

When hotels and restaurants closed due to the pandemic, SPAR Gran Canaria promoted the sale of production surpluses from local ranchers and farmers. As part of this strategy, the group helped bring to market more than 147 tonnes of fruit grown on the island and more than 45,000 litres of local milk, helping to maintain the jobs of more than 200 farmers.

The partner is expanding its solar power generation plants, which annually reduce CO2 emissions by more than 136 tonnes across its logistics centres. The Spanish SPAR Partner will also focus on recycling, energy efficiency, and plastic reduction, both in its central facilities and stores.

2021 has started with an uncertain forecast but SPAR Gran Canaria plans to strengthen its support and protection of the primary sector, local producers, and the island’s economy. The group has already renewed agreements for local potatoes and Telde oranges.
