The South African national netball team, known as the SPAR Proteas, will be participating in the 2019 Netball World Cup, taking place in Liverpool in the UK from 12-29 July.

The SPAR-sponsored South African team is one of 16 to have qualified for the 15th edition of the world’s most prestigious netball competition. It’s thought the team have their best chance in more than 20 years of winning a medal, having last won silver at the World Championships in Birmingham in 1995.

SPAR South Africa is extremely proud to be the official sponsor of the team and has announced that it will reward the team for any medals won in Liverpool, providing extra incentive. Brett Botten, SPAR South Africa Divisional Managing Director said that should the SPAR Proteas win the World Cup, SPAR would award the team R1-million, for the silver medal R750,000 and for the bronze medal R500,000.

The SPAR Proteas fly to the UK on 11 July and go straight to Wales, where they will have a training camp before playing two Tests against Wales.

About SPAR South Africa

SPAR South Africa was established in 1963 and operates four retail formats: SPAR, SPAR Express (operated in conjunction with Shell as a petrol forecourt store), KWIKSPAR (which focuses on convenience in city centres and high footfall locations) and SUPERSPAR (similar to EUROSPAR in offer).

South Africa was the first country outside of Europe to join the SPAR organisation. The SPAR Group Ltd South Africa grants sub-licences to independent retailers to operate stores under one of the four formats, with almost all of the current store portfolio being independently owned.
