SPAR Gran Canaria Race & Charity support

August 6, 2015 IN THE CATEGORY: Community, Responsible retailing, Sport sponsorship

SPAR Gran Canaria provides community support to a wide variety of sports and social activities. The SPAR Summer Run, now in its second year, raises awareness and money for the Canarias Association against Breast Cancer and the Gran Canaria Down Syndrome campaign.

3 ingredients account for the success of this run: sports, women and solidarity. The increase in the number of runners reflects not only the enthusiasm for road races but also the support for the chosen charities.

900 participants started from El Confital Bay, all wearing the event’s pink t-shirt and thereby creating a visual wave. 300 shirts bearing the campaign image were sold to non-runners at €5.00 to raise more for the Cancer foundation.

For those learning to run, two sport coaches (including Patricia Diaz and Fernando Orrite) ran training sessions throughout June. Participants could either run or hike. Runners could choose either to run a 4km El Confital route or an extended 8km route. The 12km hiking trail includes crossing the exploration grounds in a military area and is more adventurous.

SPAR Gran Canaria will continue to support the Down Syndrome campaign this year through collecting boxes present in 21 stores. Posters instore highlight this worthwhile charity which promotes social participation of patients, providing education support to assist with their integration.

The campaign awareness materials were presented by Nayra Monzon, manager of CSR in SPAR Gran Canaria and Davinia Miranda, manager of the Down Syndrome Association of Las Palmas.
