SPAR Spain partners celebrate The Day of the Canary Islands involving communities

In celebration of the Day of the Canary Islands on 30 May, SPAR Lanzarote held children’s workshops in its EUROSPAR Altavista Supermarket, reflecting local roots and continuing traditions. In addition, SPAR Gran Canaria organised a dress-up contest held in all its SPAR stores.

SPAR Lanzarote

This is the second year SPAR Lanzarote has promoted its heritage in this way. “The intention is to highlight our traditions, culture, and roots, passing on our legacy through children”, said a SPAR spokesperson. Children could participate in five different workshops from 22 to 26 May.  Children also learned about the flora and fauna of the Canary Islands. The activities were focused on the importance of keeping their fields flourishing.

Among the handicraft activities were making a little indigenous lizard in wool; designing a small paper cactus to grow the awareness that these small succulents store water and can live in any habitat; as well as designing their own bag. Traditionally, bags were used to transport grains and the local cereal, gofio, so this activity emphasised how such a bag is an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic.

From 15 to 31 May there was an exhibition of small tin boats, which are traditionally found on the island of Lanzarote. Participating children were assisted in creating a tin vessel of their own.

SPAR Gran Canaria

For SPAR Gran Canaria, the celebration of Canary Islands Day was on May 30. This year’s celebration was widely anticipated, as the festivity has not been held since 2019.

Colleagues of SPAR Supermarkets in Gran Canaria commemorated one of the most special dates for the area. Leading up to the competition, there was a great atmosphere, with traditional clothing, typical motifs, and utensils from artisan trades exhibited in all of the participating SPAR Supermarkets. Additionally, instore posters with some of the most well-known expressions of the islands, such as  ‘Más canario que el gofio ‘ (More Canarian than gofio) added to the sense of belonging.

At SPAR Gran Canaria’s headquarters, located in the El Goro Industrial Estate in Telde, about 2,000 people from shops, offices, and logistics centres gathered, accompanied by family members and suppliers.
