SPAR financially supports around four river clean-ups per year with food and beverages for the divers during the event. The company also helps cover the costs by donating €1,500 per campaign. Twenty-five divers, as well as firefighters and other volunteers, attended the 30th Ljubljanica river clean-up campaign on 27 March. This is the fifth consecutive year SPAR has supported the event.
In August 2017, SPAR Slovenia launched the ‘Think ecological’ campaign to educate consumers about sustainable waste management, plastic waste reduction, and the importance of environmental protection. The river clean-ups are part of this drive. The events have gained widespread support from local communities and environmental groups.
To date, in addition to the Ljubljanica river, the rivers Sava, Krka, Drava, Mura, Ščavnica, Lake Bled, Lake Soboča, and the coast of Fiesa have been cleaned.
Miro Potočnik, Vivera Underwater Activities Association President and initiator of the first Ljubljanica clean-up campaign, said: “Divers combine their love of diving with their love of nature by cleaning lakes, rivers, and the sea every year. I am very pleased that SPAR Slovenia supports the divers and all the other volunteers, even in challenging times like these.”
