SPAR Netherlands opens two stores in one week

July 24, 2019 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

SPAR Netherlands is growing its footprint in urban locations by opening new SPAR city stores that offer customers convenient solutions throughout the day. Earlier this month, the SPAR Partner opened two new stores in the space of one week, located in Deventer and Delft.

SPAR city stores can be found in central urban locations throughout the Netherlands, catering for transient shoppers, tourists and neighbourhood residents. The compact SPAR stores offer a wide range of Food-to-Go options and ready-to-use ingredients, as well as a complete assortment of daily grocery items. The number of stores have grown considerably in recent years.

The SPAR city store in Deventer is located on one of the city’s main streets, connecting the railway station to the city centre. The SPAR store owner, Martijn ten Berge, already operates two SPAR city stores, one in Zwolle and the other in Zutphen.

Freek van Hengel, the independent retailer who opened the new SPAR city store in Delft, has worked in the food retail sector for more than 20 years. He has dreamt of running his own convenience store since he was a child and is delighted that his dream has finally come true with SPAR. Thanks to the tried and tested SPAR store concept and the central location, Freek is convinced his new store will be a huge success.

With more than 350 stores throughout the Netherlands, SPAR is the go-to convenience brand for local, daily shopping. With firm plans in place to roll out 70 express stores and more city stores, the brand’s presence is increasingly visible across the country.

About SPAR Netherlands:

The SPAR Brand was founded in the Netherlands in 1932 by the Dutch wholesaler, Adriaan van Well and 16 independent retailers. It was established as a voluntary chain of grocers under the name DESPAR – an acronym of a slogan created by van Well to describe the organisation: Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig, which translates in English to All benefit from joint co-operation. By the end of the 1950s, SPAR was the largest food organisation in the Netherlands.

Today, SPAR Netherlands is a private company, owned by Sligro (45%), Sperwer (45%) and the SPAR independent retailers (10%). The Head Office and Distribution Centre (DC) are located in Waalwijk, from where support is provided for the more than 350 stores currently in operation.
