SPAR Hungary has invested almost HUF 500 million (€1.4 million) in the modernisation of two supermarkets in the southwestern cities of Nagyatád and Dunaföldvár. The stores have been upgraded to meet current consumer demands and technological trends. Additionally, a total of HUF 5 billion (€14.2 million) was invested in the construction of a new INTERSPAR Hypermarket in Kaposvár, which will be opened at the beginning of 2021.

This investment follows the successful renewal of an INTERSPAR store in Dunaújváros and three SPAR Supermarkets in the cities of Szentendre, Nyírbátor, and Tamási.

The SPAR store in Nagyatád was modernised with a budget of HUF 243 million (€690.000). In addition to a new façade, the store was upgraded according to the latest SPAR store concept, including lower furniture, stands, and shelves to provide a sense of spaciousness. In the fruit and vegetable department, the focus on convenience has been increased. A new grill counter and self-checkouts were installed. SPAR Hungary also implemented energy-saving LED lighting and refrigerators instore.

A total of HUF 243 million (€690.000) was invested in the store in Dunaföldvár. The upgraded store now features a new entrance and restructured sales area, including new counters for delicatessen, an instore bakery, and self-checkouts.

“SPAR Hungary attaches great importance to the interests and demands of local customers and people living in surrounding areas. Our aim is to offer a modern, convenient, and cosy shopping experience to our customers”, said Márk Maczelka, Head of Communications at SPAR Hungary.

Hungary’s 35th INTERSPAR Hypermarket

The construction of the new INTESPAR Hypermarket in Kaposvár, the 35th INTERSPAR Hypermarket in the country, has begun on a site of about 50,000m2 along Highway 61.

The interior and exterior design of the store will match the new SPAR store concept, including a so-called “mall street”, connected to the information counter, as well as checkout supervision and an integrated hot kitchen catering unit.

A playground and green area provide recreation facilities to customers with children. There are 560 above-ground parking spaces, as well as electric car charging options.

In addition to the modern interior and exterior store design, SPAR’s business concept strongly focuses on environmentally friendly technologies. Besides the energy-efficient LED lighting, the cooling and heating system of the hypermarket repurposes waste heat, by using a carbon dioxide refrigerant heat pump system.

“We make a dream come true for people living in the Somogy county. They will be delighted with this modern and eco-friendly INTERSPAR hypermarket, creating 90 new jobs. The hypermarket will offer about 20,000 products and meet current customer needs”, continued Márk Maczelka.

About SPAR Hungary

The first SPAR Supermarket opened in Hungary in 1992, following the acquisition by ASPIAG (Austria SPAR International AG) of a majority stake in General Kereskedelmi Rt. Since its launch, SPAR Hungary has been actively involved in the development of the retail industry in the country.

The move to license independent retailers to operate the SPAR Brand has proven successful for Hungary, with new stores meeting the needs of a larger number of shoppers. The retailers benefit from becoming part of the SPAR organisation with access to own brand products, operating systems and the brand, whilst consumers enjoy the increased number of store locations.
