SPAR Gran Canaria’s responsible retailing activities

August 16, 2018 IN THE CATEGORY: Responsible retailing

SPAR Gran Canaria is involved in a number of community initiatives, from sponsoring sports teams and educational initiatives to working with farmers on the island to promote local food production. In this article, we take a look at just a few of the responsible retailing activities the SPAR Partner is involved in.

Promoting healthy eating habits

Over the last year and a half, SPAR Gran Canaria has been working on a project aimed at creating awareness of the importance of a healthy, balanced diet among school children. The project is being run in educational centres on the island, helping more than 2,000 primary school children learn about healthy eating habits in a fun and interactive way. During dedicated workshop sessions, the children are taught about the nutritional value of locally-sourced fresh foods such as fruits and vegetables. They are also educated on the food pyramid and what distinguishes healthy foods from less healthy foods. After the learning sessions, the children are presented with a healthy SPAR snack by the popular SPAR mascot, FrutiSPAR.

Empowering children with music

SPAR Gran Canaria has collaborated with local musician and composer, José Brito, to give children on the island access to learning a musical instrument. José’s project called Barrios Orquestados has been so successful that it is now being run in other countries. SPAR is proud to be involved in helping children on the island broaden their cultural and educational horizons.

Support for local hospital

SPAR Gran Canaria has joined in on a one-of-a-kind project on the island to fund the construction of a large outdoor terrace and entertainment area at the Mother and Child Hospital in the capital city of Las Palmas. The terrace is being built in support of the children admitted to the hospital and is expected to be completed this summer. The project includes the creation of open, landscaped areas where the children can enjoy some outdoor time with attractions such as a toy library and small theatre. SPAR Gran Canaria has made a significant monetary contribution towards the construction of the theatre, where performances will be held for the hospital’s children and their families.
