Over the last two years, SPAR Gran Canaria has invested €1.93 million to install photovoltaic energy generating plants at its two logistics centres. Located in El Goro and Mercalaspalmas there are over 5,000 modules sited at these two plants.
This investment doubled the percentage of self-consumption of solar energy generated at the El Goro logistics centre last year. The plant now counts a total of 3,489 solar panels, which will contribute to reducing the carbon footprint while increasing the company’s self-consumption of renewable solar energy. With the completion of the plant’s installation, self-sufficiency in energy consumption is expected to increase again in the next year.
SPAR Gran Canaria also installed photovoltaic panels on the roofs of company-owned stores located in Firgas, Teror, Valleseco, and Vecindario in the last year, extending its commitment to solar, renewable, and clean energy.
Furthermore, SPAR Gran Canaria is committed to the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations. The company has prioritised investment in energy efficiency, the use of renewable energies and the installation of electric vehicle charging points. In addition, there is a focus on reducing food waste, recycling, and on reducing plastic usage. Lastly, the company has committed to supporting sustainable forest management, contributing to the reforestation of Gran Canaria.

SPAR Spain was founded in 1959 when a group of wholesalers who wished to join an international organisation came together. As a result, the brand became the first voluntary trading chain to be established in Spain.
The head office is in Barcelona. It provides buying, marketing, communications, and brand support to the 13 regional partners. Together, the SPAR operators actively continue the expansion of the brand across the country.
