SPAR Croatia invests €8 million in new supermarket in Zagreb

August 14, 2018 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

SPAR Croatia recently opened a superb SPAR Supermarket in the Zagreb district of Knežija. With a retail sales area of 2,000m², there is more than adequate space to offer a wide product assortment to shoppers.

More than €8 million was invested in this large supermarket and 60 new jobs were created for people in the area. With this latest opening, SPAR Croatia now has 109 stores around the country, bringing the brand to an increasing number of consumers.

Customers have the choice of a large variety of SPAR Own Brand products, including locally sourced fresh fruit and vegetables from the own brand range, SPAR Garden of Croatia (SPAR Vrtovi Hrvatske).

At the opening ceremony, Helmut Fenzl, CEO of SPAR Croatia, said: “66 million kuna (€8 million) was invested in the new SPAR in Knežija. When building the store, a particular focus was placed on trends and innovations in the areas of environmental protection and energy conservation. We are very proud of the store’s modern, energy-saving and environmentally friendly heating system.”

The heating system uses waste heat from the cooling system, and the cooling system itself uses only environmentally friendly energy. Throughout the heating season, the system delivers more than 50% of the energy needed by using the waste heat, which is also used to heat the water. The implemented system is not only energy efficient but also environmentally friendly as it reduces the CO2 emissions that would be produced by heating.

The store offers customers very long opening hours: Monday-Saturday from 7am to 10pm and Sunday from 8am to 9pm, as well as underground parking with 69 free parking spaces.

About SPAR Croatia

The first SPAR Hypermarket opened in Croatia in mid-2005, following the signing of the licence agreement between ASPIAG (Austrian SPAR International AG) and SPAR International in 2004.

As a member of the ASPIAG group, SPAR Croatia has access to a wide range of own brand products. Brand development has primarily taken place through SPAR Supermarkets and INTERSPAR Hypermarkets, both through the take-over of existing chains and the opening of new stores.
