SPAR Austria takes action against violence

November 30, 2022 IN THE CATEGORY: Health, Responsible retailing

Given the devastating impact of violent crimes against women, SPAR Austria is once again printing emergency numbers on checkout receipts at SPAR, EUROSPAR, and INTERSPAR stores throughout the country. The campaign was launched on 25 November, the International Day against Violence against Women, and will last until 10 December.

The emergency numbers are printed at the end of each checkout receipt and show contact details for various regional and national help services. The campaign’s goal is to make it easier for victims of violence to find the right support.

SPAR Austria raises awareness for victims of violence

As a local supplier and the largest private employer in Austria, SPAR is an important part of society. The company makes use of this position and has voiced its active commitment to non-violent coexistence since 2019.

“Appreciative and respectful interaction with each other is firmly anchored in our corporate culture. Violence in any form has no place at SPAR Austria. We see it as our duty to work for a violence-free life for all. With this campaign, we want to show victims that they are not alone and that there are places to go for support”, said Hans K. Reisch, Deputy Chairman of SPAR Austria.

16 million SPAR receipts with emergency numbers

SPAR Austria has initiated information measures against violence throughout Austria together with the responsible provincial councillors, regional or national associations and responsible counselling centres, including the Association of Autonomous Women’s Shelters in Austria. During the campaign, an estimated 16 million receipts with emergency numbers will be handed out to customers.

Recognising domestic violence

According to statistics, one in five women in Austria is exposed to regular violence from the age of 15. A large part of the assaults happens within a domestic setting.

“SPAR Austria employs about 50,000 team members in the domestic food trade, of which about 75% are women. Therefore, it is statistically likely that our female employees are also victims of violence. For this reason, we continuously try to sensitise our employees to the topic, including within the ‘Safe Together’ training courses in cooperation with the Austrian police”, said Hans K. Reisch.
