Charity support by SPAR Partners in the festive season

December 24, 2019 IN THE CATEGORY: Community, Responsible retailing

SPAR Partners around the world show great commitment to their local communities all year around but the season of giving is a great opportunity to mean that little bit more to those in need. Here we share just some of the meaningful initiatives run by our SPAR Partners.

SPAR South Africa supports local artists

SPAR South Africa teamed up with about 800 people, including 200 artists, to create handcrafted Christmas decorations. Customers spending more than R500 at SPAR South Africa’s stores in December receive a Christmas decoration for free, to the delight of both consumers and local artists who benefit by generating additional earnings in the festive season.

SPAR Italy Partner launches Christmas Campaign

Aspiag Service is donating the proceeds of sales of traditional baskets filled with Christmas delicacies to four local charities. The SPAR Partner supports a different organisation each year in a fundraising campaign called “This Christmas, Give Hope”. To generate maximum volumes, the festive Christmas baskets have been available at DESPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR stores in Northeast Italy and the Emilia-Romagna region since mid-November.

Christmas donation to the Red Cross by SPAR Norway

SPAR stores in Norway are once again offering customers the possibility to participate in a so-called Recycling Lottery when returning empty bottles and cans. All proceeds generated when shoppers press the ‘donate’ button on the instore recycling machines are combined at the end of the campaign and given to the Red Cross. This worthwhile institution is a long-standing charity of choice for SPAR Norway, bringing valuable additional funding to the Red Cross, particularly during the festive season.

SPAR Switzerland supports local charities

SPAR Switzerland supports local clubs and organisations like kindergartens, charitable foundations, home care centres for the handicapped, animal shelters and many other organisations through its annual Christmas donation campaign. The chosen recipient is selected by the team in each SPAR store, ensuring very local support is generated.

SPAR Hungary launches 23rd Joy to Give campaign

SPAR Hungary and the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service recently launched the 23rd Joy to Give! food donation campaign. Almost 3,000 volunteers from the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service collected food donations from customers in 172 SPAR and INTERSPAR stores nationwide. More than 327 tonnes of food was collected by the charity’s staff, enabling the delivery of 31,000 gift packages made up by volunteers to people in need before the holiday, exceeding last year’s incredible collection.

UK Partner donates festive gifts for children in need

Employees of James Hall & Co, the SPAR UK Partner for the North of England, donated over 430 festive gifts for vulnerable children living in poverty this Christmas. The company has been fundraising, donating teddy bears and toys, in a bid to prevent children from waking up on Christmas morning without a present.

SPAR Netherlands hosts Christmas breakfast for the elderly

The SPAR Netherlands head office, in partnership with the local charity ‘With your heart’, hosted a Christmas breakfast for 50 elderly people. All participants will be collected and brought back home by SPAR employees. After sharing a delicious breakfast together with the SPAR team, the elderly guests will have the opportunity to choose Christmas products at the SPAR Christmas market to enjoy over the Holiday Season.

SPAR Italy’s Partner Maiora supports community in the run-up to Christmas

The DESPAR license holder for Southern and Central Italy, Maiora, is running its Christmas campaign called ‘Your smile, the most precious gift’ for the fifth year in a row. Clown Therapy initiatives are being held at three Children’s Hospitals in the Apulia region. Other activities for children will be available around Christmas at local orphanages and communities whilst a charity supporting families facing challenges due to members being handicapped or autistic will also be given help. Finally, special charity dinners are being offered to 4,000 disadvantaged people, including the homeless and refugees.
