SPAR Spain partner Grupo Upper supports Cartagena community campaign

SPAR in Cartagena shows their community commitment even during the COVID-19 corona virus outbreak by supporting a food donation campaign.

Donation of eight tons of food and essentials

The Cartegena City Council is calling on all local businesses to help combat the health and economic crisis caused by the corona virus pandemic. Tapping into the distribution capacity which the local SPAR Partner has, transporting the eight tons of food and essential products to those in need will ensure goods are timeously received.

This is just one of the first solidarity initiatives being undertaken in the region and the intention will be to maintain this support network for those most affected throughout the duration of the current crisis. Being involved in  local communities is inherent to the brand, so SPAR Partner Grupo Upper didn’t hesitate to confirm its support when asked to provide transportation facilities.

Two first new SPAR Express stores open against all odds

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Spain, the opening and remodelling of retail stores has become increasingly challenging. SPAR Sureste, a subsidiary of Grupo Upper has however continued expanding in the region of Murcia, introducing a new convenience format, SPAR Express with a retail footprint of 250m, in two cities.  The first SPAR Express retail footprint opened its doors on March 20 in Playa Honda and is operated by five colleagues. Local residents have responded positively to the product assortment available instore which includes counters for butchery, delicatessen, fruit and vegetables, and bakery rounded out with a wines and spirits section and daily grocery lines.

The second SPAR Express opened in La Puebla on April 1 and is managed efficiently by four colleagues. Using the same concept, fresh focus includes charcuterie, meat, bakery, fruits and vegetables complemented by a wine section with daily grocery lines completing the offer. The home delivery service has already become very popular whilst in better trading times, the bodega will benefit residents and tourists. Government´s instructions before Easter to the whole population of Spain is to reduce and spread their visits to the stores and avoid peak hours and to respect curfew and social distancing.

Grupo Upper cooperative is licensee for the SPAR Brand in Almería, Granada, Murcia, Albacete and Alicante. SPAR Sureste currently has more than 15 SPAR Supermarkets in Mar Menor, La Manga and Cabo de Palos.
