SPAR Thailand drives sustainability agenda

July 23, 2019 IN THE CATEGORY: Responsible retailing

SPAR Thailand is maintaining its focus on local, sustainable product sourcing and the reduction of plastic bag use through ongoing campaigns initiated last year.

The campaigns included Taste of Thailand, which prompted the development of new ranges of healthy, sustainably produced products, and Let’s Save Nature Together, which helped drive the reduction of plastic with the promotion of long-life shopping bags instore and the donation of cotton bags to hospitals. Both were a big success and have inspired ongoing developments.

Organic fruit and vegetables

SPAR Thailand’s Fresh and Easy Food Market concept, places a key focus on organic farming with produce sourced from an organic Farmers Group and local producer, Uncle Bear’s Farm.

The Plak Mai Lai Organic Farmers Group in Nakhon Pathom Province grows fruit and vegetables according to the Thai principle of sufficiency economy, a sustainable development approach based on Buddhism. Crops such as salad, cucumber, melon, beans and bananas can be found in SPAR Thailand’s stores – all certified by the Thailand Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.

Similarly, Uncle Bear’s Farm provides fresh vegetables from its sufficiency economy-based land development learning centre where more than 15,000m2 of land is farmed. The likes of onions, peppers and herbs are grown without the use of pesticides and are 100% organic – meeting SPAR Thailand’s objective of providing only the best for its valued customers.

Plastic bag free day

To celebrate International Plastic Bag Free Day on 3 July, SPAR Thailand donated 1,500 cotton SPAR-branded bags to hospitals throughout the country. Ongoing efforts are being implemented to encourage shoppers to reduce the number of plastic bags used in a desire to drive down plastic pollution and waste across the country.
