The average Slovene throws away as much as 68kg of food a year. On the SPAR Slovenia website, consumers can find valuable tips on how to reduce food waste in the home by changing certain habits that have a negative impact on the environment.
For several years now, SPAR Slovenia has been working with the charity organisation Association of the Lions Clubs, District 129, on a food donation campaign.
As part of the cooperation, products that have reached their sell-by date, but are still safe to eat, are at the end of the day offered to a local charity for distribution to those in need.
These donated products are mainly freshly prepared food products, vegetables, packed and canned goods as well as dairy and bakery products. A total of 40 SPAR and INTERSPAR stores across the country currently participate in the initiative.
SPAR Slovenia points out that people can join the initiative as volunteers and help distribute food products to those in need by contacting their local Lions Club.
