SPAR opens two EUROSPAR Supermarkets in northern Italy

July 3, 2020 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

Recognising the growing importance of proximity retailing, SPAR Italy Partner Aspiag Service opened two new EUROSPAR stores at the end of April this year.

EUROSPAR Supermarket Limena

The new EUROSPAR Supermarket in Limena, in the Province of Padua, serves a catchment area of approximately 28,000 people.

With a sales area of more than 1,400m2, this EUROSPAR store has incorporated service counters for fresh fish, meats, and delicatessen, as well as a fresh bakery section. The store stocks more than 10,000 food SKUs, as well as 6,000 non-food SKUs. Customers can pay for their groceries at one of the five served checkouts or four self-scan checkouts.

The building that houses the EUROSPAR Supermarekt in Limena is newly built. During construction, due attention was paid to the inclusion of low-environmental impact solutions such as solar panels and highly effective insulation measures. The store is run by 37 SPAR team members, 30 of whom are newly hired, bringing employment opportunities to Limena.

“We are delighted to be welcoming this new EUROSPAR Supermarket as well as 30 new members of our team, who together with seven other colleagues, will be running this important store. This sends out a strong message about employment opportunities”, said Francesco Montalvo, Managing Director Aspiag Italy.

EUROSPAR Supermarket in Bologna

Located in an area known for its great cuisine and food traditions, this EUROSPAR Supermarket services a catchment area of more than 15,000 people. Just like the store in Limena, the new store in Bologna is run by 37 SPAR team members, 30 of whom are newly hired.

The new EUROSPAR Supermarket is geared towards facilitating a convenient shopping experience – from the presence of a large outdoor parking space to the integration of the both staffed and self-service checkouts.

“In these days, Emilia Romagna and Italy are focused on the theme of restarting. At DESPAR, in the last two months, we have worked with great commitment to support local communities and this, once again, is an opportunity to thank all our colleagues in the entire production chain for the work done”, Francesco Montalvo said.

About SPAR Italy

SPAR International first granted a licence for the operation of the SPAR Brand to SPAR Italy in 1959. The first store opened in the latter part of 1960 and with it, SPAR became the first partnership of retailers and wholesalers to operate in Italy. SPAR Italy, known locally as DESPAR Italia, licenses regional partners, all of whom work together to grow the brand across the country.

The DESPAR Partners operate stores under three formats: DESPAR neighbourhood Supermarkets, EUROSPAR Supermarkets and INTERSPAR Hypermarkets. Many of the larger format stores are company-owned, reflecting the scale of investment required. While the majority of the company’s turnover is acquired through these larger format stores, the independently owned neighbourhood supermarkets remain a key part of the business.
