The announcement was made during his opening speech at the brands’ bi-annual Convention ‘Fresh Focus’ which brought together retailers representing approximately 450 SPAR, SPAR Express and EUROSPAR stores from across the country to discuss opportunities for the future and share best practice.

Speakers at the event highlighted how grocery retailers in Ireland can respond to the improving economy and grow their businesses in the face of ongoing external challenges including continued food deflation and Brexit.

Addressing retailers, Leo Crawford said, “While challenges remain in the market place, including the continued uncertainty over Brexit, improving economic conditions are changing how consumers are shopping, providing new and exciting opportunities for convenience retailers in Ireland.  We believe that convenience is high on the agenda for Irish consumers and we are working with retailers to help them attract new customers and grow revenues by focusing on fresh food, innovation and digital trends to give consumers what they want. We also think this will provide new growth opportunities for the business and we are anticipating continued store growth in 2017 and beyond.”

Additional presentations were made by a high profile line-up of local and international guest speakers including Olympic silver medallists and home grown heroes, Gary and Paul O’Donovan “the O’Donovan brothers” about staying motivated for success. SPAR International Managing Director Tobias Wasmuht was also present, reflecting on the opportunities in online retailing and the global market.
