July 21, 2021 IN THE CATEGORY: Sport sponsorship

SPAR Switzerland has presented the Swiss Handball Association (SHV) with a cheque worth CHF42,000 (€38,788) at this year’s Swiss Handball Awards ceremony. SPAR has been a strong supporter of the association for over ten years. A dedicated SPAR Handball App allows customers to add a percentage to their grocery purchase sum which is donated to a sponsorship fund.

On 1 July 2021, the best handball players of the 2020/21 season were honoured with the Swiss Player and MVP Awards. During the event, Karin Locher, Head of Marketing SPAR Switzerland, presented Andrija Pendic with the most valuable player award for his achievements during the past handball season. In the women’s category, Charlotte Kähr received the award.

Karin Locher also presented a cheque worth CHF42,000 to SHV Head of Marketing, Roger Keller. Thanking SPAR for its long-standing commitment and active support, he said, “The contribution from the SPAR Handball App is essential to support young talent. I call on all handball clubs and fans to continue to make use of the SPAR Handball App next year to ensure that the amount continues to increase.”

Donation system enabled by app

Launched in 2016, the SPAR Handball App can be downloaded for free for iOS and Android smartphones. Using the app, customers can follow their favourite clubs and game results and add 2.5% or 1% of their total instore purchase sum to donate to their preferred club. The app is extremely user-friendly, with customers only needing to show the app’s barcode at the checkout.

Supporting local communities is inherent to the SPAR way of operating. The Swiss handball club programme is a great example of how successful this community approach benefits people from all walks of life.
