SPAR Gran Canaria has been awarded the 2016 Roque Nublo Gran Canaria prize. The award acknowledges the special actions of people and companies in the social, economic, sports, cultural, and tourism fields and is awarded by the local government, the Cabildo Insular.

The Roque Nublo, a volcanic rock, is a famous landmark of the island and a natural monument. It has become a symbol of reward for the contributions made by citizens towards the local community. SPAR Gran Canaria was awarded the prize for being one of the leading companies in the Gran Canaria food sector, generating employment and promoting and supporting local farmers.

The SPAR Spain wholesaler started operating on the island 30 years ago when a group of independent retailers created a Distribution Centre to facilitate the availability of supplies and services to their supermarkets. Today, SPAR Gran Canaria is a leader in fresh and operates 169 stores, covering 95% of the island and providing employment for 2,645 people.

Commenting on the award, Ángel Medina, President of SPAR Gran Canaria, said: “For us, this prize acknowledges all our efforts. We dedicate it to our people, for they make the company what it is.”
