SPAR Slovenia’s commitment to clean waters

SPAR Slovenia supports a number of impressive water clean-up initiatives. SPAR Slovenia has collaborated with the YouSea Institute to conduct four marine clean-ups, removing over 1,000kg of litter from seagrass meadows. SPAR Slovenia has also supported the traditional clean-up of the Ljubljanica River and the Lake Bled clean-up for eight years. These efforts are crucial for preserving Slovenia's nature and promoting environmental sustainability.

SPAR Slovenia and YouSea collaborate in marine clean-ups

The You Sea Institute, supported by SPAR Slovenia, conducted four clean-up initiatives in the Slovenian sea to remove over 1,000kg of litter from seagrass meadows, which is crucial for biodiversity. The campaign also aims to raise awareness about the importance of these habitats, home to many marine organisms, and to contribute to the long-term conservation of the marine ecosystem.

Professional divers and volunteers carried out clean-ups in Piran, Izola, Koper, and Ankaran, using special equipment to carefully remove waste hidden among the seagrass leaves.

SPAR Slovenia and the YouSea Institute recognise that the biggest challenge is raising public awareness about preventing pollution of seagrass meadows in the long term.

SPAR Slovenia joins local river clean-up campaign

For the eighth consecutive year, SPAR Slovenia supported the traditional clean-up campaign of the Ljubljanica River. The clean-up campaign this year brought together 72 divers, fishermen, firefighters, and other volunteers who removed 660kg of waste from the local river.

Since 2017, SPAR Slovenia and the Slovenian Diving Association have been working together to keep Slovenian waters clean. With the participation and guidance of the Vivera Underwater Activities Association and the Slovenian Diving Association (SPZ), it is ensured that the event is carried out safely. This year’s clean-up was challenging due to a strong current and poor visibility as a result of heavy rains. Only experienced divers were allowed to participate.

SPAR Slovenia supports Lake Bled clean-up

SPAR Slovenia supported the traditional Lake Bled clean-up for the eighth time. The Association for Underwater Activities Bled (DPD Bled), the Bled Fishing Family, the Municipality of Bled, and Bled Infrastructure successfully carried out the 32nd cleaning of Lake Bled and its shores. This event, under the auspices of the Slovenian Diving Association, included students from two elementary schools for the fifth consecutive year.

Bled, a popular tourist destination in Slovenia, attracts many visitors annually, leading to significant waste accumulation. The clean-up campaign is considered to be the oldest ecological action in the country. This year, 104 divers cleaned Lake Bled at 24 locations to depths of 5 to 7 meters. Additionally, 70 children and 6 teachers attended. This year’s clean-up resulted in the removal of 200 kilograms of waste.
