SPAR Slovenia once again joins the local river clean-up campaign

For the eighth consecutive year, SPAR Slovenia supported the traditional clean-up campaign of the Ljubljanica river. The clean-up campaign this year brought together 72 divers, fishermen, firefighters, and other volunteers who removed 660kg of waste from the local river.

Continuous effort

Since 2017, SPAR Slovenia and the Slovenian Diving Association have been working together to keep Slovenian waters clean. With the participation and guidance of the Vivera Underwater Activities Association and Slovenian Diving Association (SPZ), it is ensured that the event is carried out safely. This year’s clean-up was challenging due to a strong current and poor visibility from heavy rains. Only experienced divers were allowed to participate. They removed 660 kilograms of waste, including traffic signs, bicycles, electric scooters, a radio, and a computer.

Raising awareness

The cleanup event featured a cultural programme, including a performance that showcased the depths of the Ljubljanica river and demonstrated the critical impact of our attitude towards the environment and the treatment of nature. After the clean-up, all waste collected from the Ljubljanica riverbed was exhibited on the Čevljarski bridge to raise public awareness about responsible waste management.

Miro Potočnik, President of the Vivera Underwater Activities Association, concluded the campaign by saying: “I am grateful to everyone who managed to participate in this year’s clean-up campaign and contributed to a clean Ljubljanica riverbed, and I would also like to thank SPAR Slovenia, which has been loyally supporting us for eight years.”
