Bringing the brand to new neighbourhoods typifies the growth of SPAR in Spain with affiliated operators having a multi-format strategy to meet shopper needs.

SPAR Express

Creating employment for six colleagues and offering home-delivery, the new 120m² SPAR Express in A Valenzà epitomises convenience. The neighbourhood can choose from 1,300 products including fresh, SPAR Own Brand and well-known brands. The bakery, fruit and vegetable range and charcuterie choice attract customers.

SPAR Supermarkets

Residents of Alcossebre and Vinaroz now have access to modern SPAR Supermarkets, following renovation. With a focus on sustainability, LED lighting has been adopted throughout and energy-efficient fixtures used. A wide assortment of SPAR Own Brands and well-known national brands ensure a good range available in dry grocery. The shopping experience is enhanced with a fresh and local product in a self-service format with fruit, vegetables, bakery and pastries, and assisted butcher’s and delicatessen sections. New service counters in the SPAR Supermarket in Vinarzo created employment for another four colleagues bringing the total to eleven running the store.

More investment in refurbishment was carried out on a 300m²  SPAR Supermarket in Carrizal de Ingenio, a 120m²  store in La Feria and a 289m²  store in Las Torres on Gran Canarias. With a total of 55 SPAR Supermarkets and a total of 192 stores on the island, the SPAR Brand is strong in this market. The latest refurbishments not only focused on improving the shopping experience with wider aisles but also on increasing the range. As convenience stores, local customers can now find a good selection of fresh products, including many locally sourced. As part of their drive to sustainable stores, SPAR Gran Canaria not only offer zero-kilometre products but also energy efficient fixtures. Shoppers in the neighbourhood of the SPAR store in Las Torres can also use the home delivery service for purchases above €30. Both stores operate long opening hours, with teams of 13 and 21, respectively.

EUROSPAR Supermarkets

Investment in the modernisation of larger EUROSPAR Supermarkets meeting the weekly shopping needs of customers has seen three stores re-opening. The 1,700m²  in Denia, a 1,000m²  store in Vinaroz and a 1,500m²  store in Alicante have all been revamped. Increasing the retail sales area to offer wider choice was a good opportunity to implement sustainable technologies. Energy-efficient refrigeration, and LED lighting were fitted throughout. Informative digital screens are used to communicate more effectively and in real-time with customers. Through these screens, special offers and choice of the increased product range can be communicated. Fresh, locally sourced, fruit and vegetable section, traditional butchery, delicatessen, instore bakery, and a fish counter with service and self-serve options are available. The EUROSPAR Supermarket in Denia now has an expanded F&V and fish counter. The store also has services to support customers with disabilities and improved facilities for the 15-member team.

The EUROSPAR Supermarket Vinaroz which has a team of 17 has benefited from a new roast chicken offer, based on a regional speciality, in addition to extra storage capacity and new technology.  More jobs were created for residents of Alicante with the addition of services from the bakery counter, the inclusion of a wine cellar and increased choice. The EUROSPAR Supermarket in the centre of Alicante is managed by a team of 25.

A new corporate owned EUROSPAR Supermarket opened in Badajoz, offering over 7,000 products comprising fresh, SPAR Own Brand and well-known brands. The 30-strong team keep the store continually open from 09:30 on Monday until 21:30 on Saturday. Customers welcome the service counters in bakery, butchery, delicatessen and fresh fruit and vegetable sections. Earlier this year, a new 232m² independently owned SPAR Store was opened also in Badajoz.

About SPAR Spain

SPAR Spain was founded in 1959 when a group of wholesalers who wished to join an international organisation came together. As a result, the brand became the first voluntary trading chain to be established in Spain.

The head office is in Barcelona. It provides buying, marketing, communications, and brand support to the 13 regional partners. Together, the SPAR operators actively continue the expansion of the brand across the country.
