More than 2,500 people took part in the 2023 SPAR Zimbabwe Rainbow Run, which raised $20,000 for two of its long-time charity partners Childline and Zimbabwe National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Zimbabweans of all ages and walks of life came together to take part in the SPAR Zimbabwe Rainbow Run. More than 2,500 participants registered for the event held in Harare, raising an incredible $20,000 for Childline and the Zimbabwe National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ZNSPCA).

A day full of colour

The event started with a brisk workout led by one of SPAR Zimbabwe’s event partners. Getting everyone in the spirit, cannons released edible, non-toxic colour powder as the 2,584 participants began their run. The neighbourhood became alive with colour as participants ran the course. Over 100 volunteers from Childline, ZNSPCA, SPAR stores, School Interact clubs, local businesses and NGO’s provided great support with marshalling, registration and litter collection.

Rainbow of hope

The event created a literal rainbow of hope, promise and fun for Childline and ZNSPC. Shamiso Pfumayaramba, in charge of Responsible Retailing for SPAR Zimbabwe, said, “The rainbow is a symbol of hope.  It is a promise to protect.  It is a message of love and signals the end of a storm.  This is what Childline and ZNSPCA seek to do for hundreds of thousands of children and animals without a voice in their hour of need, every day.”

SPAR Zimbabwe takes great pride in being able to contribute to organisations that  make a big difference in the country. Childline is an organisation that provides a safe, confidential, and child-friendly environment for children to report abuse and seek help. The funds will go towards refurbishing the institution’s Masvingo drop-in centre, upgrading security at the Bulawayo call centre, and providing funds to keep the 24-hour toll-free helpline open at all times.

ZNSPCA is a non-profit society that works towards the promotion of effective means for the prevention of cruelty and relief of suffering to animals throughout Zimbabwe. The contribution from the Rainbow Run participants will be put to good use building new kennels, providing community training for animal welfare, and providing food for the animals housed in SPCA refuges across the country.
