SPAR Slovenia, the largest retailer in Slovenia in volumes of fish sold, recognises its environmental responsibility. This partnership with the YouSea Institute reflects SPAR Slovenia’s commitment to giving back and preserving nature.
Many marine organisms in the Slovenian Sea lack suitable habitats because silt covers much of the seabed. Marine grasslands, or sea meadows, provide essential habitats, breeding grounds, and safe havens for fish, crabs, shellfish, and echinoderms. These grasslands are crucial for many economically important species at various life stages. Preserving them is vital for the health of our seas and our future.
SPAR Slovenia and the YouSea Institute will conduct cleanup activities in these sea meadows, which shelter numerous organisms. The project will also raise awareness about the importance of sea grasslands for the ecosystem and promote sustainable practices among coastal residents and visitors. Through this initiative, SPAR Slovenia and the YouSea Institute aim to contribute to the long-term protection of the marine environment and biodiversity in the Slovenian Sea.
“At SPAR, we believe healthy seas and oceans are crucial for the future of our planet, and we want to contribute to their conservation. In cooperation with the YouSea Institute, we aim to positively impact marine ecosystems and the preservation of natural resources for future generations,” said Maša Šprajcar-Rančić, SPAR Slovenia’s Head of Sustainable Development.
SPAR Slovenia will also communicate its commitment to the conservation of marine biodiversity with the official “We care about the sea” label, awarded by the YouSea Institute.
In cooperation with the Slovenian Diving Association, SPAR Slovenia has supported the clean-up of Slovenian waters since 2017. As part of their sustainability initiative “Together for a Better Tomorrow”, SPAR Slovenia supported the cleaning of Lake Bled and Lake Soboško, the coast of Fiesa and the rivers Drava, Mura, Ščavnica, Sava, Krka and Ljubljanica.
