SPAR Kadoma in Zimbabwe has this year again sponsored the Mawegu (Mashonaland West Golf Union) Amateur Golf Championships. Despite limited spectator presence due to COVID-19 protocols, there was a high turnout of 54 players from in and around the Mashonaland West region of Zimbabwe.

The competition is one of the Zimbabwe Golf Association’s national competitions. The players gain points towards their World Amateur ranking and a chance to be selected for the Zimbabwean team that plays in a regional competition annually.

SPAR Kadoma is an independently owned family business located in the agricultural hub of Kadoma, about 2 hours outside of Zimbabwe’s capital city, Harare.

Community involvement

As a community-oriented store, SPAR Kadoma supports several great causes and organises many of Kadoma’s community events throughout the year. As a result, SPAR Kadoma won the SPAR Zimbabwe CSR Independent Store of the Year award for 2020.

The Directors of SPAR Kadoma are very involved in the club: Bruce Newman is Kadoma Golf Club Captain, and Bruce Taylor is Kadoma Golf Club President.

“Golf is a great outdoor activity, which encourages youngsters to appreciate our environment. In addition, the sport promotes a healthy and active lifestyle. We encourage and assist underprivileged people to play golf for free every Monday”, Bruce Newman said.

The Winner of the Mawegu Amateur 2021 Golf Championships was Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa, who is currently studying at a university in the United States on a golf scholarship.

SPAR Kadoma has sponsored the Mawegu Amateur Golf Championships since 2012. The Kadoma Club is trying to develop a Junior Golf Development Programme to foster young talent and support national sporting initiatives in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Arts, and Recreation in Zimbabwe.

About SPAR Zimbabwe

In 1967, SPAR Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) became the 13th country to join the SPAR network after signing a licence agreement with SPAR International.

In late 2015, an independent retailer, Darren Lanҫa, took over the licence to operate the SPAR Brand in Zimbabwe after the previous licence holder divested this retail division.

In a challenging economic environment, SPAR Zimbabwe continues to grow its store network. It also remains actively involved in the local community, helping to make a difference through charitable SPAR sponsored events.
