SPAR Italy Partner raises more than €73,000 for women’s charities

March 9, 2018 IN THE CATEGORY: Community, Responsible retailing

Customers at all DESPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR stores in four regions in the Northeast of Italy, could donate an amount of their choice to four women’s charities when doing their shopping. The campaign ran from 24 February to 4 March and the funds were handed over by DESPAR to four different charities (one per region) that promote women’s rights and welfare.

Aspiag Service, the DESPAR licence holder for the Italian regions of Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trentino Alto Adige and Emilia Romagna, has a strong track record of adding value to the communities it serves.

Paul Klotz, General Manager of DESPAR Northeast, explained the reasons behind this campaign: “We are seeking to not only financially support these charities, but to more importantly raise awareness of their work. We feel called to act upon such issues, to help achieve actual integration and equal rights.”

DESPAR raised a sum of €73,457 from 108 donations at the checkouts, in only a week’s time. The SPAR Partner was able to donate €18,364 to each of the four chosen charities. The handing over of the funds took place on 8 March, to mark International Women’s Day.

The charities receiving the funds

The charity that received the funds in Veneto is Casa Viola, a shelter for abused women and their children. A team of specialists supports women in making a new start both workwise and in terms of finding accommodation, helping them become completely independent.

For Trentino – Alto Adige, the funds went to Casa delle donne / Frauenhaus, a charity for women who are victims of abuse and violence. It offers counselling, a Women’s home and shelter in a confidential location.

In the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, the funds went to the local committee of A.N.D.O.S. (National Association of Women who have survived breast cancer surgery). This charity supports post-surgery emotional and physical welfare, and carries out health education initiatives on breast cancer prevention.

In Emilia Romagna, the funds benefited U.D.I. (Italian Women’s Union), a body founded in 1944 that strives to preserve and promote the heritage and rights of women, and which assists women in need of support and legal aid. It works in partnership with the Regional Centre against violence to women.
