March 22, 2024 IN THE CATEGORY: Responsible retailing

In 2024, SPAR Hungary will again cooperate with the National Animal Protection Foundation to support cats and dogs living in shelters. Last year, the initiative collected 32,000 kilograms of dry food and more than 45,000 canned food.

More than a decade of support

SPAR Hungary has supported animal shelters, animal parks and wildlife parks in Hungary for more than a decade. The organisation provided products that have been withdrawn from commercial circulation, but can still be used to feed animals. Additionally, SPAR organised pet food collection campaigns with the National Animal Protection Foundation, supporting NGOs involved in animal rescue. In addition to collecting donations, the aim is to raise awareness of responsible animal care and the importance of the work of shelters.

Significant donations in 2023

In 2023, customers donated a total of 27,344 kg of dry food, 17,704 canned food items, and 1,216 pieces of dog treats to dogs in 174 fundraisers nationwide. For cats, 27,814 items of canned and bagged foods, and 4,646 kilograms of food were collected.

In May 2023, SPAR Hungary organised the Paw in Trouble collection alongside the National Animal Protection Foundation. In a two day campaign, almost 9,000 kilograms of dry food and 4,500 cans of canned food for dogs, plus over 1,000 kilograms of dry food and 2,500 cans of canned food for cats was collected in 35 INTERSPAR Hypermarkets across the country. Additionally, customers provided various animal equipment and cleaning products, and SPAR Hungary donated an additional one million forints to the National Animal Protection Foundation.

Support through pet food collection campaigns returns this year, with organisations collaborating with the National Animal Protection Foundation. SPAR and INTERSPAR customers can donate pet food, which provides a tangible impact for shelters nationwide.
