SPAR Hungary has reopened four supermarkets following extensive renovations. With an investment of €4.6 million, the converted stores offer customers a modernised and convenient shopping experience, with extensive product ranges and improved instore services.

“Purchasing power is increasing in Hungary and as such, we are focused on renewing our existing store network in addition to opening new outlets. Customer feedback shows that modernised stores, offering new services, are more popular. For this reason, we are continuing our store modernisation programme,” said Márk Maczelka, Head of Communications at SPAR Hungary.

With an investment of more than €4.6 million, the modernisation of SPAR stores in Szeged, Érd, Sárvár and Szigetvár have been completed. The stores are located in major tourist destinations and can expect higher turnover during the summer vacation period. Modernising these stores means easier, faster and more convenient shopping, even in peak periods.

The SPAR Supermarket in Érd was renovated at a cost of €1.3 million, including extending the sales area and modernising instore equipment. New features include a dedicated counter for fresh convenience products, a salad bar and an exhibition bakery storage unit. In the revitalised store, reduced-consumption LED lighting and cooling systems ensure low energy use, while self-checkout units cater to shoppers on the go. The team of 25 offer high levels of service to the valued customers of the SPAR Érd Supermarket.

In the town of Sárvár, the SPAR Supermarket was reopened after extensive renovations totaling €1.39 million. The interior is now both more spacious and easier to navigate. In addition to energy-saving cooling equipment and efficient lighting, the supermarket now boasts an expanded delicatessen counter, bakery and  fresh produce department. The bakery product units are easier to handle and the service counters feature an extensive range of the SPAR to Go foods, providing warm and grilled meals. New self-checkouts have also been installed, particularly appealing to shoppers with smaller baskets.

SPAR Hungary invested €555,000 in the modernisation of the SPAR store in Szigetvár, now offering customers an even better shopping experience with increased convenience. The interior has been refreshed with a new delicatessen counter and bakery, while the fruit and vegetable department has been equipped with new fixtures and fittings. In renovating the store, special attention was given to energy efficiency which now sees cooling/heating and lighting being provided by a new cutting-edge system.

In Szeged, customers are enjoying the fully renewed SPAR Supermarket, refurbished at a cost of €1.5 million. The newly designed store includes self-checkout units, new refrigerators and better equipped food service departments. At the entrance of the store there is a marketplace style fresh produce section, a delicatessen counter and an area where shoppers can find freshly made warm and grilled dishes. Also in this store energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly cooling/heating and lighting technology has been installed, in line with SPAR Hungary’s environment strategy.

About SPAR Hungary

The first SPAR Supermarket opened in Hungary in 1992, following the acquisition by ASPIAG (Austria SPAR International AG) of a majority stake in General Kereskedelmi Rt. Since its launch, SPAR Hungary has been actively involved in the development of the retail industry in the country.

The move to license independent retailers to operate the SPAR Brand has proven successful for Hungary, with new stores meeting the needs of a larger number of shoppers. The retailers benefit from becoming part of the SPAR organisation with access to own brand products, operating systems and the brand, whilst consumers enjoy the increased number of store locations.
