SPAR Gran Canaria’s sustainability objectives are evident throughout both its wholesale and retail operations. The company prioritises projects and initiatives that advance sustainable measures, creating more efficient and environmentally friendly stores and Distribution Centres.
Generating energy through photovoltaic solar plants at their logistics centres in reducing CO2 emissions was a core focus of the company in 2021. SPAR Gran Canaria has boosted solar power generation at its fruit and vegetable logistics centre in Mercalaspalmas, which will help the company achieve its energy sustainability goals.
The SPAR Spain partner has introduced improvements that help reduce its carbon footprint by optimising energy efficiency at its SPAR Ingenio, SPAR Málaga, and SPAR Las Canteras stores. The renovations have included new LED lighting systems and state-of-the-art vertical refrigerator cabinets, with closing systems that retain low temperatures and generate significant energy savings. During the thorough update, the stores have been transformed into highly functional spaces that offer an enhanced shopping experience.
In all its stores across the island, SPAR Gran Canaria offers the best fresh local products with a quality-price ratio that makes it a leader in fresh fruits and vegetables. This is a win-win situation as it shows extensive support to the primary sector while maintaining local specialities in the range.

SPAR Spain was founded in 1959 when several wholesalers who wished to join an international organisation came together. As a result, the brand became the first voluntary trading chain to be established in Spain.
The head office is in Barcelona. It provides buying, marketing, communications, and brand support to the 13 regional partners. Together, the SPAR operators actively continue the expansion of the brand across the country.
