SPAR Gran Canaria highlights healthy habits through musical project

SPAR Gran Canaria has teamed up with the Canary Isles Government to encourage healthy lifestyles through an educational and musical project known as Sanolandia.

The objective of Sanolandia is to promote healthy lifestyles among children, as 44.2% of the children between 6 and 9 years on the island suffer from overweight or obesity. In the last quarter of 2019, the musical reached more than 6,000 children from Preschool and Primary Education with its first performances.

The pedagogical project was launched last year at the Medical College of Las Palmas by a well-known paediatrician. The aim is to reach more than 10,000 schoolchildren between the ages of 3 and 8.

The contents of this 50-minute music show is aimed at raising children’s awareness on the benefits of fresh foods, sun exposure protection, exercise, and show the importance of essential hygiene habits. In addition, the “FrutiSPAR” band also sings and dances in the shows to spread the importance of eating healthy foods to prevent obesity. During the show, schoolchildren also get a healthy breakfast gym bag containing fruit, water, and gofio – a traditional porridge – from SPAR.

With the support of SPAR Gran Canaria, Sanolandia will continue touring the main theatres and schools of the island this school year.

SPAR Gran Canaria has also sponsored the Me Gusta Fair for the fifth year running, which includes workshops for school groups. Under the supervision of a SPAR expert, children created art using local fruit, a fun way to familiarise young children with different produce varieties and to encourage fruit consumption.

Given the great interest generated by the project, the Ministry of Education of the Canary Islands Government will support it as it gains a larger scope. There are plans in place to hold further sessions in Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, Gomera, and Hierro. SPAR Gran Canaria is supporting the SPAR members of the whole archipelago, underpinned by the Better Together spirit of SPAR.
