Colruyt Group, SPAR Partner in Belgium, develops store network further, launching two modernised stores in Eksaarde and Wevelgem with an improved offering. Another opening was SPAR Lamot in Mechelen, which is home to the first SPAR Enjoy fresh food to go solution.

SPAR Eksaarde

In November, the SPAR store in Eksaarde welcomed customers once again with a festive reopening and lots of promotions. The store has been part of the fabric in Eksaarde for almost 50 years. As a result of the renovation, the store stands at 700m², giving a more open and welcoming feeling for customers. The new building is more sustainable: with investments in a CO2 installation, underfloor heating via heat recovery and solar panels.

SPAR Eksaarde was refitted in the style of the latest generation of SPAR stores, focusing on fresh and local. Store Manager Kevin De Storme emphasised this point, saying “We try to focus heavily on our local products. You can come to us for honey, fruit juices and strawberries that are grown or cultivated in our village.”

SPAR Wevelgem

The modernised SPAR Wevelgem re-opened its doors on October 19 following investment of the interior. SPAR Wevelgem offers a large assortment, providing a one-stop-shop for shoppers. Customers will note a particular focus on fresh and local products from the region. As people enter the supermarket, they are greeted with an extensive fruit and vegetable offering, as well as a fresh sushi department, before moving into the bakery and delicatessen. The store hosted a festive opening welcoming new and familiar customers back instore, alongside promotional discounts during opening week.

SPAR Lamot

Central Mechelen welcomed the opening of the new SPAR Lamot store with a celebratory reception in November. The local supermarket is designed using the latest layout and pays a lot of attention to sustainability and local products. SPAR Lamot is the second store owned by entrepeneur Kristof Merckx, who said that “Being able to run a supermarket in the centre of ‘my’ city is a dream.”

A large selection of local products are available, emphasising a focus on local sourcing. The store is the site of the first SPAR ENJOY food to go solution, providing customers with a variety of healthy meals prepared using only fresh ingredients.

SPAR Lamot also has a focus on sustainability. The refrigeration system is
new, with CO2 emissions 90% lower compared to a traditional refrigeration system. Energy-efficient LED lighting and a heat pump have been installed and all refrigeration cabinets have doors to reduce cooling costs.
