Download imageThe Linz Marathon has grown from 5,000 participants in 2002 to over 20,000 participants from over 80 nationalities this year. Not only is it the largest grassroots sporting event in Austria, but it has long been a major running event with an international stature, making it a tourist magnet and an important economic factor for the region.
This year also saw a separate competition for people with disabilities as part of the Junior Marathon on Saturday. For beginners in the world of running, there will also be an “eighth marathon” (5km race) this year, fostering inclusivity in the event.
This year, SPAR supported the runners across the various competitions with almost five tons of SPAR Natur*pur organic bananas and 3,000 litres of carbonated drinks distributed across the course. The Linz Marathon is also keeping up with the times and aligning the event according to the criteria of the Austrian Ecolabel for Green Events. With this in mind, SPAR Austria used reusable containers, supporting the Linz Marathon on its way to becoming a green event.
