SPAR Italy partner Aspiag Service has donated €260,000 in total to four regional women’s charities. The SPAR operator received customer donations during the latest annual ‘World Needs Women Fundraising’ campaign. Donations could be made upon checkout at any DESPAR, EUROSPAR or INTERSPAR stores in the Northeast and Emilia Romagna regions in Italy.

SPAR customers made 386,885 small donations in total. As a result, an impressive €261,287 was raised during the fundraising period, 20 February – 7 March 2021.

On International Women’s Day, 8 March, Aspiag Service officially handed over the sums raised in each region to four local women’s charities, one per region where the SPAR partner operates. These organisations, were chosen for their important work within their local communities. Through this campaign, Aspiag Service emphasises its initiatives supporting women, promoting gender equality and against gender violence.

Regional charities

The chosen charity in Veneto is Polis Group which has worked for over 10 years to support women and their children who are victims of violence. Their goal is to provide them with shelter, practical advice and support. This donation will fund the “Purple Home” shelter for women and children who are victims of violence. This charity also received a donation from the previous fundraising campaign in 2020 also to fund a ‘Purple Home’ shelter.

For the region Friuli Venezia Giulia, FVG Endometriosis Association was the chosen partner. This is a charity that supports some 26,000 women who suffer from this condition. Operating in the region for over 20 years, they have helped countless women in this time.

In Trentino-Alto Adige, the charity chosen is the Association of Elderly Homes of South Tyrol (Verband der Seniorenwohnheime Südtirols). This is an important organisation, already operating for over 30 years, helping elderly residents in retirement homes.  More than two thirds of the residents in this region receiving support are women.

The charity MondoDonna Onlus Association has been chosen for the region Emilia-Romagna. This is a major charity combating gender-based violence. They offer shelter to migrant women and families and, in general, support people in vulnerable situations.

About SPAR Italy

SPAR Italy was first granted the licence to operate the SPAR Brand in 1959. The first store opened in 1960, and with it, SPAR became the first partnership of retailers and wholesalers to operate in the country. SPAR Italy, known locally as DESPAR Italia, licenses regional partners, all of whom work together to grow the brand across the country.

The DESPAR Partners operate stores under three formats: DESPAR Neighbourhood Supermarkets, EUROSPAR Supermarkets, and INTERSPAR Hypermarkets. Many of the larger format stores are company-owned, reflecting the scale of investment required. While the majority of the company’s turnover is acquired through these larger format stores, the independently owned neighbourhood supermarkets remain a key part of the business.
