It is with immense sadness that SPAR South Africa advises the tragic passing of an iconic retailer - Udo Rencken on 6 January. Udo and his wife Nancy were involved in a car accident that morning and Udo sadly succumbed to the injuries sustained during that accident.

Udo needs no introduction to SPAR members – he was a SPAR legend, having served on the KZN Regional Guild Committee and SPAR National Guild Committee. Udo  was a highly acclaimed SPAR retailer who was deeply respected by SPAR colleagues worldwide. He extolled the best of the SPAR values with kindness, generosity, and openness to warmly welcome international colleagues seeking to learn from the impressive chain of pioneering Rencken’s SPAR stores. Udo made a lasting impression on many, and strongly represented the independent retailers of SPAR South Africa on the International SPAR Guild for many years. He shall be fondly remembered in the utmost highest regard by the worldwide SPAR community.

During his career with the SPAR brand, Udo consistently achieved much success over the years, receiving many awards and accolades in recognition of his positive contribution to the business. Udo was devoted to the SPAR system of voluntary trade; he believed deeply in the business model and in the strength and competitive advantage that the network of independently owned retail stores gives the SPAR brand. Udo believed that the strength of the brand was in its retailers and he was a champion for retail even as his active days in his stores slowed down, and his children took over the businesses.

Udo was also a family man and built a legacy together with his wonderful family in South Africa. Udo brought all his children into the business and was very proud of their achievements within the group.

With Udo’s passing, the SPAR family has lost a giant, a legend, and a friend, as Udo has left an indelible mark on the SPAR organisation and will be sorely missed by all.

The SPAR family’s sympathy and prayers go out to his wife Nancy and their children Anton, Rupert, Frank, Bjorn and Nicole during this difficult time. In particular, we wish Nancy a fast recovery and that her strength be fully restored.
