SPAR Northern Ireland to trial self-checkout app for stores

SPAR UK Partner, the Henderson Group, has just announced plans to trial the Ubamarket 'scan, pay and go' app with its EDGEPoS system, which is installed in its SPAR and EUROSPAR Supermarkets in Northern Ireland.

The app, which will initially be tested in a small number of stores, will allow customers to create shopping lists on their phones, guide them around the store to their items, scan goods as they shop and then pay by using their phone. Ubamarket’s app will also work alongside Henderson Technology’s new self-checkout systems which are appearing in a growing number of stores in Northern Ireland.

Will Broome, chief executive of Ubamarket, said the time is right for retailers to embrace technology to bridge the gap between instore and online shopping.

“Ubamarket provides retailers and consumers with a nimble scan-and-go system, allowing them to enjoy the convenient service offered on online platforms, in bricks and mortar stores,” he said.

Darren Nickels of Hendersons said: “We know from the stores we own and operate in the group, that customer needs and expectations are changing, and we are ensuring our solutions meet those needs both now and into the future.

About SPAR UK

The United Kingdom (UK) became a member of SPAR in 1956 when a group of independent wholesalers obtained the SPAR licence from SPAR International. There are five regional partners with strategically placed Distribution Centres in each region. A Central Office located in London provides national Marketing and Buying services for the group and supports the development of the SPAR Brand in the UK.

SPAR has led the convenience market in the UK for many years but has faced increasing competition in recent times. Always innovative, SPAR Partners have continued to grow the brand. A combination of independently-owned licensed retailers and company-owned stores spanning forecourts, airports, train stations, city centres and local neighbourhoods can be found throughout the country.
