This new training partnership aims to develop knowledge and skills among colleagues, helping them stay up to date on local market changes. It will also encourage team members to further their professional development in a fast-evolving retail industry.
Specific training will promote retail knowledge and career development through courses on Category Management, Shopper Engagement, Brand Reputation, Brand Storytelling, and Coaching. In addition, courses provide updates on the state of Italy’s retail industry and opportunities for benchmarking with international players.
People training is a major cornerstone of SPAR Italy’s business development and success. For this reason, it has chosen to join Retail Institute Italy, the nation’s main retail industry association.
Retail Institute Italy currently has over 200 members. These include retailers, A-brand suppliers, and retail partners. Operating since 1995, Retail Institute Italy has held more than 700 events, providing its members with the knowledge needed to stay up to date in an increasingly complex and sophisticated market.
On a global scale, SPAR International provides state-of-the-art retail training tools on a free-of-charge basis through its SPAR Academy for all SPAR members worldwide.

SPAR Italy, known locally as DESPAR Italia, was first granted the SPAR Brand’s licence in 1959. The first store opened in 1960. With it, SPAR became the first partnership of retailers and wholesalers to operate in the country. In addition, SPAR Italy licenses regional partners, all of whom work together to grow the brand across the country.
The DESPAR Partners operate stores under three formats: DESPAR Neighbourhood Supermarkets, EUROSPAR Supermarkets, and INTERSPAR Hypermarkets. Many of the larger format stores are company-owned, reflecting the scale of investment required. While the company achieves most of its turnover through these larger format stores, the independently owned neighbourhood supermarkets remain vital.
