Fragadis, the family-owned SPAR Spain wholesaler operating across Catalonia and Valencia, acquires Líder Aliment, another family-owned company operating the SPAR license in Extremadura and Eastern Andalusia. The agreement is subject to confirmation by the CNMC (the National Commission on Markets and Competition).

Strengthening national presence

This strategic union not only marks a significant milestone for the two businesses but also reflects the common objective of strengthening the brand’s presence in the Spanish retail market. With the addition of approximately 200 SPAR and EUROSPAR supermarkets in the Líder Aliment estate, Fragadis will have a retail network of over 420 stores. The company will have two large logistics centres of 25,000m2 each, ensuring efficient and robust management of the supply chain, as well as the ability to meet the ambitious plans for the future.

Following the acquisition, Fragadis announces expectations of reaching an annual turnover of about €700 million. The company will employ approximately 4,700 team members and operate a total retail sales area of 250,000m2.

Integrated leadership and operations

Fragadis has confirmed that both companies will fully integrate their operations. Líder Aliment’s co-directors and shareholders, Óscar Marín and Francisco Peces, will continue to lead the business in Extremadura and Eastern Andalusia, working closely with Fragadis’ executive team, headed by CEO Óscar Plana.

Fragadis says that the acquisition reflects a “joint commitment” to the future of the SPAR Brand within Spain’s retail distribution sector, reinforcing the strength and unity of the brand across regional markets.

Founded in 1961, Fragadis has steadily expanded its footprint through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions. Notable milestones include the purchase of 57 stores from Miquel Alimentació in 2014, the acquisition of Alicante-based Sucesores de Pedro Soriano Buforn in 2018, and the integration of 31 Economy Cash supermarkets in 2024.

About SPAR Spain

SPAR Spain was founded in 1959 when a group of wholesalers who wished to join an international organisation came together and sought a suitable solution. The brand became the first voluntary trading chain to be established in Spain when SPAR Spain was granted a license to trade under the brand by SPAR International. Regional SPAR wholesalers actively continue to build the brand’s presence across the mainland and the islands.
