SPAR South Africa continues to demonstrate its commitment to grassroots sport and education through its sponsorship of the Tshwane Prime League (TPL). This initiative, led by Tshwane Netball, plays a vital role in developing high-performance netball talent across Gauteng.

Empowering communities through sport and education

The TPL unites 10 tribes of individually enrolled players, offering a structured and inclusive environment for nurturing future players, coaches, umpires, and officials. SPAR South Africa’s support reflects our shared belief in the power of sport to uplift communities, build confidence, and create opportunities, especially for women and youth.

Mpudi Maubane, SPAR South Africa’s National PR, Communications and Sponsorships Manager, emphasised: “At SPAR, we believe that community is where growth begins. Supporting initiatives like the Tshwane Prime League isn’t just about the game — it’s about creating opportunities for players, coaches, and officials to develop, grow, and inspire others.”

“We’ve seen first-hand how sport can change lives; it builds confidence, instils discipline, and opens doors for education and future leadership. Our investment in platforms like the TPL reflects SPAR South Africa’s wider commitment to women’s empowerment, grassroots development, and building stronger, more connected communities.”

A platform for excellence and inclusion

The Tshwane Prime League is more than a competitive structure; it is a community movement designed to inspire participation and pride across all levels of the sport. By fostering a safe, inclusive, and family-oriented environment, the league ensures that every participant – from young players to seasoned coaches – can thrive.

Riana Bezuidenhout, President of Tshwane Netball, shared: “The support from SPAR reinforces everything we stand for at Tshwane Netball – empowerment, development, and opportunity. The Tshwane Prime League is built on the values of growth and inclusivity, and having SPAR as one of the partners, which invests not only in sport but also in education and community upliftment, is invaluable.”

SPAR South Africa’s commitment to women in sport

SPAR South Africa’s support of the TPL is part of a broader national footprint in sport, including the SPAR Women’s Challenge, the SPAR Grand Prix Series, and partnerships across rugby and netball that promote inclusivity and equal opportunity.

Beyond sponsorship, SPAR South Africa continues to drive impactful initiatives such as the End Period Poverty Campaign, providing affordable menstrual care through SPAR Petals pads and encouraging community participation through donation drives at events like the TPL.

These efforts reflect the retail organisation’s holistic approach – using sport, education, and accessibility as tools to build stronger, healthier, and more empowered communities.

About SPAR South Africa

SPAR South Africa was established in 1963 when a license was granted by SPAR International to a local business. Today, the license holder is listed on the Johannesburg stock exchange and operates different retail organisations as well as a robust distribution network. Grocery stores fall into four retail formats: SPAR neighbourhood, SPAR Express (operated as petrol forecourt stores), KWIKSPAR (focusing on convenience in city centres and high footfall locations), and SUPERSPAR Supermarkets (similar to the EUROSPAR format in offer). SPAR South Africa grants sub-licences to independent retailers to operate SPAR branded stores across the country.
