SPAR Slovenia continues to invest in modern retail experiences and sustainable practices. The retailer has modernised the INTERSPAR hypermarket in Ljubljana’s Citypark shopping centre and the SPAR Magdalena Supermarket in Maribor, while also opening new franchise stores in Šentjur and Kozje.

Modernisation of the INTERSPAR hypermarket in Ljubljana

At the end of August, after three months of renovation, SPAR Slovenia reopened its modernised INTERSPAR hypermarket in the Citypark shopping centre in Ljubljana. The store stayed open during the renovations, and now welcomes visitors with a fresh, modern look designed for a pleasant shopping experience.

The revamped hypermarket has a retail sales area of 6,000m2 and features a new layout that reflects current shopping trends. The departments are arranged differently, starting with non-food items and ending with fresh produce. At the entrance, the renovated store offers freshly baked pizzas, focaccia, burek, pastries, sandwiches, desserts, sushi, and influencer-inspired fruit and salad bowls.

Self-service bakery racks are now placed next to the bread section. Customers can find 46 items from local suppliers in the “Local Delicacies, Our Pride” section. The fresh food department, now next to the butchery and deli, offers seasonal fruits and vegetables, available loose or in bulk. The sushi bar serves freshly made sushi daily, and the checkout area features new fast, card-only registers for quicker service.

Sustainability remains a priority. The hypermarket uses smart electronic price tags reducing paper waste, energy-saving LED lighting, and a wood pellet oven for baking. Waste heat from cooling systems is reused to heat water, and a glass packaging return station supports circular economy efforts.

Renovated SPAR Magdalena Supermarket reopened in Maribor

The SPAR brand has been part of Žolgarjeva in Maribor for 16 years. This year, the supermarket was fully renovated and recently reopened with a fresh, modern look.

The renovation took just two months and included a full interior update with newly designed departments. As before, 26 employees continue to ensure a quality offer and a pleasant shopping atmosphere. The fruit and vegetable section is placed at the front of the supermarket and also features products from Slovenian producers. Bread and pastries are available in a buffet-style bakery section, and the deli has a new design. The store also features a well-stocked butchery and a fish market. A dedicated section offers ready-made meals, along with fresh SPAR To Go products.

Sustainability was also a focus during the renovation. The supermarket now uses energy-saving LED lighting, a new CO₂-based heating and cooling system, and closed, eco-friendly refrigerators and freezers. Electronic price tags have been introduced to reduce paper use.

New independent retailer run stores

At the beginning of September, a new independent retailer run store was opened in Šentjur, having 200m² retail space with a modern design focused on convenience and customer-friendliness. A team of four staff members runs the store, which offers a selection of food products from well-known brands and SPAR Own Brands. Special attention is given to fresh food products, including fruit and vegetables, and a section with packaged meats, cheeses, and freshly baked bread and pastries.

A SPAR independent retailer run store also opened in Kozje. It is the 15th independently owned store launched this year and the 44th SPAR independent retailer run store in Slovenia. The store covers 180m², employs four team members, and places a strong focus on fresh food.
