SPAR Slovenia encourages sustainable shopping

In July, SPAR Slovenia joins the International Plastic-Free Month celebrations. As part of their “What Circulates, Connects Us” campaign, the retailer emphasises sustainable shopping options by eliminating packaging and plastic bags in all service departments and INTERSPAR Restaurants.

SPAR Slovenia’s plastic reduction initiatives

At the start of 2024, SPAR Slovenia became the first retailer in the country to eliminate single-use plastic bags from its fruit and vegetable departments, saving 105 tonnes of plastic annually. Last year, this initiative reduced plastic bag consumption by one third. Now, customers can choose between biodegradable bags or reusable SPAR mesh bags. Additionally, SPAR Slovenia offers reusable shopping bags with a special pocket for mesh bags and cotton bags designed by students from the University of Ljubljana’s Academy of Fine Arts and Design.

Sustainable shopping guide and sustainability campaigns

In April 2024, SPAR Slovenia and Ecologists Without Borders launched SPAR Slovenia’s Sustainable Shopping Guide. This guide provides useful tips and highlights the range of eco-friendly products and services available.

In April and May this year, SPAR Slovenia’s “What Circulates Connects Us” campaign focused on the benefits of returnable glass packaging. This month, SPAR Slovenia encourages customers to bring their packaging for use in all service departments (meat, fish, delicatessen) and INTERSPAR restaurants.

In eleven INTERSPAR hypermarkets nationwide and one SPAR supermarket, customers can choose from up to 48 types of bulk food, with an increasing number of organic products. SPAR Slovenia sells over 65% of its fruit and vegetables without packaging and further reduces plastic packaging by using more eco-friendly and recycled materials.

“SPAR Slovenia encourages customers to shop and live sustainably. In July, we invite our customers to bring their own packaging and bags, enabling them to shop without packaging in many departments. With these initiatives, I believe we can create positive change in the wider environment,” said Maša Šprajcar-Rančić, Head of Sustainable Development at SPAR Slovenia.
