The fundraising campaign ran in all company-owned DESPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR stores in Italy’s three Northeastern regions of Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia-Giulia as well as in Emilia Romagna and in Lombardy. From 29 November to 19 December 2021, 522,000 customers shopping in these stores donated over €330,000 in support of six very worthy causes. In each region of Alto-Adige, Trentino, Veneto, Friuli- Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna and Bologna, support has been given to help those in need.
Funds raised in Friuli-Venezia Giulia will support the IRCCS Burlo Garofalo Children’s Hospital in Trieste for the construction of a newer and more welcoming waiting room for young patients and for purchasing electromedical equipment.
The charity donations raised instore in Alto-Adige were handed to Vinzenzgemeinschaft of Bolzano. Donations from Trentino will help the Vincenzo De’ Paoli Association in Trento.
In Veneto, support was given to the Fenice Association of Portogruaro, which raises awareness, provides training, runs study- and self-help groups on eating disorders, thereby creating a support network for those affected and their families.
In Emilia-Romagna, support went to the projects of the Andromeda Association. Lastly, a contribution was made towards the purchase of a pediatric ultrasound for the Maggiore Hospital in Bologna.
This year more funds were raised than in the previous year, enabling greater support to the worthy causes.

SPAR Italy, known locally as DESPAR Italia, was first granted the SPAR Brand’s licence in 1959. The first store opened in 1960. With it, SPAR became the first partnership of retailers and wholesalers to operate in the country. In addition, SPAR Italy licenses regional partners, all of whom work together to grow the brand across the country.
The DESPAR Partners operate stores under three formats: DESPAR Neighbourhood Supermarkets, EUROSPAR Supermarkets, and INTERSPAR Hypermarkets. Many of the larger format stores are company-owned, reflecting the scale of investment required. While the company achieves most of its turnover through these larger format stores, the independently owned neighbourhood supermarkets remain vital.
