SPAR partners drive growth in Spain with new and modernised stores

February 25, 2026 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

SPAR partners in Spain are expanding their retail network with the opening of the first SPAR supermarket in Vilanova del Camí, Central Catalonia, a project realised through the partnership between Transgourmet Ibérica and Llobet Group. At the same time, comprehensive refurbishments, such as the modernisation of SPAR Lomo Los Frailes in Gran Canaria, demonstrate continued investment in sustainability, energy efficiency, and enhanced customer service across the country.

Transgourmet Ibérica and Llobet Group open first SPAR supermarket

Transgourmet Ibérica, one of the wholesalers operating the SPAR brand in Spain, has opened its first SPAR supermarket in Vilanova del Camí, Central Catalonia. This milestone follows a strategic partnership with the local distribution company, Llobet Group, signed in April 2025. The agreement positions Transgourmet Ibérica as the main supplier for Llobet’s stores and paves the way for further SPAR supermarkets in the region.

The new SPAR store offers 390m2 of modern retail space and has created six new jobs in the community. Customers will find a carefully selected range of everyday groceries, with a strong focus on local products. The supermarket features fresh fruit and vegetables, a butcher’s department, a delicatessen, and a bakery. Ready-to-eat meals are also available for added convenience. In addition to its wide food selection, the SPAR supermarket offers extra services such as a bakery, a coffee and breakfast area with fresh pastries, coffee, and freshly squeezed juice, as well as Amazon lockers for customer convenience.

With this opening, SPAR returns to the area, marking the beginning of a new phase of growth and presence for the brand. The partnership between Transgourmet and the Llobet Group also includes the conversion of existing Llobet stores into SPAR supermarkets, further expanding the SPAR presence across Central Catalonia.

SPAR Gran Canaria reopens SPAR Lomo Los Frailes with an enhanced shopping experience

SPAR Gran Canaria has reopened the SPAR Lomo Los Frailes supermarket following an extensive refurbishment. The modernisation programme is part of the retailer’s ongoing commitment to offering the best possible service and shopping experience on the Canary Islands.

The refurbishment has introduced several key improvements. Open refrigerated display cabinets have been replaced with door-enclosed models, which help prevent product losses and significantly reduce electricity consumption. The store has also implemented electronic labels, providing dynamic product information and allowing prices and promotions to be updated in real time, ensuring customers always receive the latest deals.

With a total sales area of 300m 2, the supermarket offers a wide assortment across all departments, including the butcher’s, delicatessen, bakery, fruit and vegetable section, and a dedicated area for prepared food.  This makes shopping more convenient for customers looking for ready-to-eat meal solutions.

The store layout has been revised to create a more comfortable and intuitive environment, making it easier for customers to find what they need. The self-service range has been expanded, while the personalised customer service that SPAR Gran Canaria is known for remains unchanged.

About SPAR Spain

SPAR Spain was founded in 1959 when a group of wholesalers who wished to join an international organisation came together. As a result, the brand became the first voluntary trading chain to be established in Spain, having been granted a license by SPAR International.  Together, regional SPAR wholesalers continue to actively expand the brand across the country.
