In the centre of Bergen, SPAR Norway celebrated the opening of a concept compact supermarket that targets urban customers on the move.

New store concept

The SPAR Vaskerelven supermarket is the first in Norway with this new store concept, designed in collaboration with SPAR International. With a retail sales area of 250m², this compact supermarket is tailored to meet the needs of an urban target group. Instore, the product assortment includes a range of food and non-food items, incorporating a variety of options to-go, including a coffee bar with freshly brewed iced coffee, a salad bar, fresh baked goods, and a separate chicken bar.

From the store exterior which combines digital signage with clear views inside, shoppers access the food-to-go area, enjoying the chilled F&V offering before entering into the aisles of dry grocery. The offering is aimed at key commodities combined with eating and cooking moments, providing customers with a great shopping experience.

“We have confidence in this concept. This is the first SPAR store in Norway where we are testing this model, featuring a strong selection of hot dishes. At the same time, we meet the need for good coffee and offer a compact supermarket range,” said Ole Fjeldheim, SPAR Norway chain director.

Located in the centre of Bergen, the SPAR Vaskerelven supermarket aims to be a natural stop for customers throughout the day, whether to find a quick snack, a full meal, or to do their daily shopping. At the new opening, store manager Andreas Nederberg said: “We are very happy that we have opened this beautiful store. In addition to hot food, we put our own twist on local specialities. Our Bergen shilling buns with cheese cream and salted caramel are selling rapidly. The bacon pancakes have also been popular, as well as our fried chicken drumsticks. Our goal is to offer great meals – quickly and easily.”
