SPAR Hungary puts local suppliers centre stage

The importance of supporting local producers and high-quality domestic products has increased during the pandemic. Over the past months, SPAR Hungary has joined a successful campaign, called ‘Buy domestic! Support domestic!’, and launched another edition of its ‘Hungaricool by SPAR’ competition, which provide shoppers with new, sustainable food products from local Hungarian suppliers. This time, part of the competition will be aired on national television.

‘Buy domestic! Support domestic!’ campaign

SPAR Hungary has adapted to the new retail trading environment following the impacts of the pandemic. One aspect has been the pressure put on many companies which in turn is threatening the livelihoods of many people. The company is addressing this through community partnership and the promotion of domestic products will help all in the industry to successfully cope with this challenging period.

A long-standing supporter of Hungarian products and suppliers, SPAR Hungary has once again joined the campaign ‘Buy domestic! Support domestic!’ and participates actively in popularising products made in Hungary.

The campaign was launched by Magyar Termek Nonprofit Ltd., an organisation responsible for the Hungarian product trademark system.

SPAR’s Hungaricool competition on national television

The ‘Hungaricool by SPAR’ competition will be aired on national television in the popular show Cápák Között (Among Sharks). In this show, internationally recognised investors, the Sharks, assess entrepreneurs who would like to challenge and revive their business or present their creative products.

The ‘Hungaricool by SPAR’ winners have the chance of selling their products in 34 INTERSPAR Hypermarkets across the country and in SPAR Hungary’s online shop.

The purpose of our ‘Hungaricool by SPAR’ competition, launched in 2019, is to find small Hungarian entrepreneurs producing high-quality food products and to give them the opportunity to introduce themselves to a broad audience. SPAR Hungary will continue the competition, but this year joined one of the most popular business shows on national tv and extended the scope of competition categories.

About SPAR Hungary

The first SPAR Supermarket opened in Hungary in 1992, following the acquisition by ASPIAG (Austria SPAR International AG) of a majority stake in General Kereskedelmi Rt. Since its launch, SPAR Hungary has been actively involved in the development of the retail industry in the country.

The move to license independent retailers to operate the SPAR Brand has proven successful for Hungary, with new stores meeting the needs of a larger number of shoppers. The retailers benefit from becoming part of the SPAR organisation with access to own brand products, operating systems and the brand, whilst consumers enjoy the increased number of store locations.
