Over the past year, SPAR Hungary has invested more than €1.76 million in the development of its logistics centre in Üllő. More recently, the company added a new transhipment hub in Budapest with a further €5.04 million investment. The goal is to improve the efficiency of supplying stores in the country’s capital.

New transport facility in Üllő logistics centre

In 2024, SPAR Hungary expanded its logistics centre in Üllő by building a new transport complex. The €1.76 million project created a 410m² facility that includes offices for transport coordination, a lounge for drivers, changing rooms, and other amenities to support driver welfare. The goal was to improve working conditions for the 150 team members involved in transportation, such as drivers, coordinators, office and HR staff, and garage supervisors. Located in the southern part of the logistics centre, the new building offers a major upgrade in size, function, and comfort. It also houses all transport planning and scheduling operations and is complemented by a large car park with 150 spaces.

New transhipment hub in Budapest

“For our retail chain, which operates 652 stores across the country, professional logistics is a daily challenge. It ensures that our products reach SPAR and INTERSPAR stores on time and in top quality,” said Márk Maczelka, Head of Communications at SPAR Hungary.

Currently, around 1,800 employees work in logistics, including 250 drivers. Key priorities include managing freight tasks, coordinating staff, and improving the supply system.

In recent years, SPAR Hungary has made major investments in this area. A new transport complex was built in Üllő to offer modern working conditions. In 2025, SPAR Hungary also opened a new transhipment hub in Budapest, supported by an investment of nearly €5 million. This hub helps supply stores in the capital more efficiently and reduces the environmental impact of logistics operations.

SPAR expands transport fleet with new partner

Since the summer of 2024, WSZL – the Hungarian logistics arm of the Waberer’s Group – has been delivering goods to SPAR stores in the Budapest area. As part of the partnership, experienced drivers operate 10 twelve-tonne trucks from SPAR’s Üllő warehouse, making two to four deliveries per day based on demand. This adds up to around 1,000–1,100 deliveries per month, moving about 15,000 pallets of goods.

SPAR Hungary now works with seven haulage subcontractors, using 90 vehicles for daily transport. In addition, SPAR owns a unique fleet in the Hungarian retail sector comprising 115 refrigerated, articulated trailers. This fleet will continue to grow in 2025, with new vehicles and more drivers being added.

Maintaining outstanding quality in logistics

Last year, both of SPAR Hungary’s logistics centres received the “High level” certification from the independent audit organisation Quality Austria once again. The centres in Bicske and Üllő both achieved a score of 97.84% in the evaluation. In addition, SPAR Hungary was awarded the IFS Logistics certificate for the 12th time, confirming the company’s commitment to safety and quality throughout the logistics process, from receiving goods to delivering them to stores.
